St. John’s Home Celebrates June 25
The twenty-ninth annual St. John’s Day celebration took place on Wednesday, June 25. The festivities brought together St. John’s staff, residents, and their families for a day of joyous relaxation.
This year’s program was crowded with activities for all ages. The morning opened with the traditional boardwalk mile run. Then the St. John’s community was gathered for an interfaith prayer service. This year’s theme was "Education: It’s For Life."
The afternoon was filled with athletic activities, clowns, potato sack races, arts and crafts, pony rides, face painting, and a special performance by Stan Brown and the famous Pepper Steppers. Residents, their families, and visitors enjoyed a barbeque luncheon, and then staff competed against the residents in the traditional softball and basketball games. The activities closed with awards and prizes.
St. John’s has been in the Rockaways since 1948. Many former residents and staff members take the occasion of this annual celebration to connect again with old friends. Looking ahead to September 24, 2003, St. John’s will celebrate its one-hundredth and thirty-fifth anniversary at a gala fundraiser at Russo’s on The Bay.
