Varsity Softball

This year, the Kearney softball team returned nine veterans from last year: Anne Roccasalva, Caitlin Morch, Sarah Davitt-Sweeney, Kaitlin O’Neill, Andrea Welter, Jennifer Estrada, Jennifer Pomponio(Belle Harbor) and Christina Stasolla. In addition, three members of the JV moved up: Lauren D’Acierno, Marissa Iacullo and Theresa Puglise. Freshman Valerie Zarneski completed the team, under the leadership of coaches Dennis Labisi and Gina Trani. League victories included wins over Fontbonne, St. Saviour’s, Bishop Ford, and non-league wins over Madison, Midwood, Moore Catholic and St. John’s Villa gave the girls another undefeated regular season with a record of 13-0, finishing as Brooklyn Champs for the sixth consecutive season.

On May 15th, they played Stella Maris at Our Lady of Grace field in the quarterfinals of the playoffs and really showed their true strength. The game remained scoreless until the 4th inning, when Nicole Estrata scored the first run off a ground ball hit by Caitlin Morch. In the 6th inning, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Caitlin Morch hit a three run home run out of the park, securing their win. They placed third in the diocesan competition. Congratulations to all the girls on a great season!

Golf

Kearney’s golfers are a small but powerful team that continues to improve each year. Their individual and team accomplishments posted new best records throughout the spring. Sophomore Melissa Micotta had a 9-3-2 match record and finished in the top three of league golfers. She was selected to represent Kearney in the All-Star Game, along with junior Elizabeth Nolan, who posted a 6-4-1 match record. Junior co-captains Alexandra Barnes (Rockaway Park) and Katie Moran (Rockaway Park) posted big victories in key matches, to lead the team to a school best record of 7-5-2. This reflected wins against St. Peter’s, Moore Catholic, Fontbonne, St. Joseph Hill and St. John’s Villa, among others. The girls went on to become Brooklyn champs in the league championship playoffs. Katelyn McCluskey (Belle Harbor), Melissa Cranston and Susan Halligan also proved to be valuable members of the team, according to coach Anthony Troiano.

Outdoor Track

Kearney’s track team kicked off the outdoor season at the Iona Prep Relay in New Rochelle with an impressive showing. The M&M girls (Linda Michlik and Cristin Mullen) and Chrysta "Iron Horse" Irolla led the assault in the 800 meter run by capturing 1st, 2nd and 4th place honors respectfully. Cristin (Belle Harbor) followed in 2nd place, running a personal best of 2 minutes 44 seconds. Chrysta captured the 4th place medal.

Freshman sensation Courtney Donohue (Rockaway Park), shone in the Freshman 800 meter run by becoming only the 2nd Kearney freshman to break the 3-minute barrier for the half mile race, running a sizzling 2 minutes 55 seconds.

Cristin wasn’t satisfied with just one medal. She also picked up a third place medal in the 1500-meter run. Her time of 5 minutes 25 seconds was very impressive for early in the outdoor season.

Another Kearney first!!! Kearney’s mile relay team competed in Philadelphia at the 109th running of the Penn Relay Carnival, the oldest and most prestigious track meet in the country. Linda Michlik, Cristin, Chrysta Irolla and Noelle Raffaele represented the school. Their time of 4 minutes 34 seconds broke the old school record by 2 seconds – a great job by all four.

Cristin Mullin competed in the 25th annual Rockaway Beach 5 mile Race. She led from the start to capture 1st place for her age group, posting a fast 35 minutes for the race. She was also awarded a 3rd place trophy for overall woman performance in the race. Congratulations to the whole team, for a record-breaking season!
