On Saturday, June 28, 2003, the BCAC/St. Virgilius Girl’s Softball Team defeated Immaculate Conception 5 – 3 in the CYO diocesan championship in a thrilling game. After finishing the regular season with an undefeated record the girls swept through the playoffs defeating the other top teams to win the crown.

In the diocesan championship game the girls were leading 1-0 early but Immaculate Conception came back with three in the third inning putting the Channel girls behind but not out of the game. The girls never gave up, battling back, to tie the score 3-3 in the 6th inning after a triple by Nicole Rustico and a clutch home run by MVP winner Adrienne Guttieri. The team went ahead for good by a score of 5-3, with timely hitting and by Stephanie Galimi, Deanna Glade, Danielle Malone, and Alyssa Lonnborg.

The girls played great defense to preserve the win and give Coach Ricky Guttieri his second CYO Championship. Coach Rick Guttieri has been the backbone of the BCAC girl’s softball program for many years, coaching each season and always teaching the girls the right way to play the game of softball. Ricky has taken many teams to the playoffs and this being his second diocesan championship victory the members of the BCAC would like to say thanks to Ricky and hope to see him continue to coach even though his daughter Adrienne will be heading off to play for Stella Morris next year...

After the game, CYO presented Adrienne Guttieri with the "MVP of the Tournament" trophy for her outstanding pitching and timely hitting. This was a great team effort by every player on the team and hopefully the girls will take what they have learned and bring it to the high school level. The Catholic high school softball program will be receiving some outstanding players as they girls move on. Stella Morris will be a team to be watched as many girls from the BCAC and Rockaway Little League attend their school. Look for Stella to bring home a championship in the coming years.

Coach Ricky Guttieri would like to thank Assistant Coaches, Marilyn and Debbie for all of their help, and give special praise and thanks to an outstanding group of girls: Stephanie Galimi, Tiffany Galimi, Deanna Glade, Alyssa Lonnborg, Danielle & Stephanie Malone, Crystal Medina, Tiffany Ott, Nicole Riscigno, Christy Rustico, Stephanie Wagner, Brianna Warner, Allison Zeller, and my daughter Adrienne, who finally pitched the way I knew she could. In a final note the girls have made all the members of the BCAC very proud for their Diocesan championship victory and we wish the older girls good luck as they move on to high school.
