Wave Columnist In Movie Contest
The Wave film critic Robert Snyder will be screening an award-winning film that he made with his brother, Philip, at the Long Island International Film Expo 2003. The Snyder Brothers production, "Paperman," is scheduled to be shown in competition on Wednesday, July 16, 9:30 p.m., at the Malverne Cinema 4. A dark comedy, "Paperman," was the winner of the Best Film Award at the 2002 Filmmakers Connection Minifest. In 2001, the Snyders won the Best Story Award for their film, "Rear View Mirror," at the same competition. As adolescents, they won two consecutive first prizes for entries in the Kodak Teenage Movie Contest.
Their recent film, "Paperman," concerns a beleaguered newspaper editor/reporter/photographer/paperboy, who is bullied into coming up with the Big Story by his abusive boss. The satire explores his desperate state of mind.
Writer/co-director Robert Snyder stars in the title role. His mother, Eleanor Snyder of Lawrence, co-stars as his bed-ridden grandmother. Ralph Edsell, formerly of Cedarhurst, plays a tormented actor/friend, while Howard Swengler gives a scene-stealing performance as the "Boss from Hell."
The L.I. International Film Expo 2003 is sponsored by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation, the Nassau County Film Commission and the Suffolk County Film Commission. More than 60 short and feature length independent films from all over the globe will be screened during the weeklong film festival from July 11 through July 17.
Among the notables starring in the entries are Charles Durning, Dee Wallace Stone, Kelly Ripa, David Ogden Stiers, Wings Hauser, rappers Craig Mack and Kain. The winners will be chosen by a combination of audience ballot and judging committee. They will be honored at the Salute to Independent Filmmakers and Awards Ceremony Gala at Chateau Briand on Aug. 21 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. For more information as well as a schedule of other films and synopses, one may call 571-3168, e-mail debfilm @aol.com or check www.LongIsland Film.com and www.NassauCountyNY Development.org.
