Mets Advance To Jamaica Bay LL Championship
After numerous rain delays, the Jamaica Bay Little League Rookie Division playoffs finally got underway on Monday night with the first place George Russo, Esq. Marlins taking on the fourth place Ozone Park Kiwanis Mets.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the beginning with the Marlins’ Jamie Romano and the Mets’ Anthony Galimi controlling the tempo. The Marlins broke through first, scoring the games first run in the bottom of the second inning but the Mets quickly tied it up in the top of the third. The Marlins were able to tack another run on in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead into the top of the fourth inning but couldn’t hold off the surging Mets who scored two runs in their half of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
Thomas Stelloh, with a sharp single to leftcenter, had the big blow for the Mets. In the meantime, the Mets’ Joseph Stelloh, who had replaced Galimi in the bottom of the third, continued to stifle the Marlin bats and the Marlins were able to push another run across the plate in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, James Carricato, pitching for the Marlins, who had made a great play on a liner up the middle to limit the damage in the top of the fifth and keep his team close, led off with a drive to center that had extra bases written all over it. But the Mets’ centerfielder grabbed the ball on a hop and fired a strike to second to nail the stunned Carricato in a close play at second base. This play turned out to be the turning point of the game as the Marlins were unable to muster another threat until two were out in the bottom of the sixth. Thomas Stelloh, who had come on in the fifth, closed it out for the Mets on a strikeout with the a runner on base.
Congratulations to both teams and their managers for playing a very exciting game and good luck to the Mets, who will play for the championship on Sunday, June 29th, at 9:00 am. Remember, all players will receive trophies on Family Day, Saturday, August 30th!
