Two Arverne Men Shot In Separate Incidents
Police are investigating two Arverne shootings that sent one man to the hospital with a bullet wound to his leg and another man with two bullet wounds who remains in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital.
In the first shooting, units from the 101 Precinct responded on the evening of Monday, June 23, to a call of "shots fired." Police sources said upon arriving at the scene, they found no evidence of a shooting, but canvassed the area and arrested two people on unrelated charges. A short time later, officers were directed to St. John’s Hospital where they found the victim, Zachery Cobb, 21, of 440 Beach 54 Street.
Police said Cobb told them he was walking by the back of the property on Beach 54 Street, near his residence, when he heard multiple shots followed by a burning sensation in his left leg. Cobb was driven to the hospital for medical assistance, according to the police.
In the second incident, an unidentified man, 19, was shot two times by an unknown assailant who fled the scene right after the shooting.
The shooting took place at about 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, in front of 5149 Almeda Avenue.
No arrests have been made in either case, and a motive has not been determined for either of them, according to the office of the New York City Police Department’s Deputy Commissioner for Public Information.
Police sources also declined to comment on whether the two shootings were connected, or whether the recent shootings were related to the spate of shootings in that area over the past few months.
