Ryan Rudden Memorial Tournament A Success
On Sunday June 15, the first annual "Ryan Rudden Memorial Tournament" in roller hockey was held. Despite being the first hot Sunday in Rockaway and being Fathers Day; the turn out was great. The tournament consisted of four full teams and played an elimination series. After eight hard fought games, it came down to team Black and team White. Team Black consisted of Ryan’s former Rockies teammates and Team White, which was nicknamed "The Old Men", was made up of older and more mature Rockies veterans. The final game was very exiting. With the Old Men leading late in the game, Team Black scored to tie it up and resulting in a nail biting shootout. Team White was finally victorious, and their goaltender, Wayne Wagner, was named tournament MVP and very movingly gave the trophy to the Rudden family.
Prior to the game, Ryan’s number 11 was retired by the Rockaway Rockies and the family was presented with a framed #11 Jersey. Ryan Rudden was killed in a car crash in August at the age of 17. The organizers of the tournament would like to thatnk Sports Depot, Rogoff’s, Jimmey Kelly, President of the Rockaway Rockies, Dave Zagor and the Forcina family.
