Morgen Beck, of Belle Harbor, and Kenzo Tsushima, of Far Rockaway, are among the math team members at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, which outperformed some of the top-rated high schools in the state in the New York Mathematics League 2003 competition. Beck is a junior, and Tsushima is a freshmen.

In its best year ever, the math team finished twenty-fourth in a field of 181 schools, placing in the top 15%. The Academy achieved the nineteenth highest score in the state, outscoring 90% of the competing schools.

The results placed it among the top-rated high schools in the state, including such "perennial powerhouses" such as Stuyvesant and Brooklyn Tech, competitive-admission schools in New York City; and Great Neck South, according to Shelley Silbering, coach of the Academy team and head of the math department.

Silbering said the achievement was especially noteworthy since the other schools have much larger enrollments and math teams, and schedule regular practice time to help them prepare for the test. The Academy has no such regularly scheduled practice sessions.

Among Nassau and Suffolk teams, the Academy team placed seventh out of thirty-sixth, placing it in the top 20% on Long Island as well as New York City.
