Pepper Steppers Win Championship
Stan Pepper Steppers triumph again, winning the 30th Annual World Invitational Double Dutch Championships. The competition was held at the University Center in Sumter, South Carolina from June 13-14. The Pepper Steppers team from Far Rockaway New York, which practices at Sorrentino Recreation Center, put on a dazzling display of speed, rope tricks, flips and team togetherness. The tournament itself is a two-day event with the first day eliminating all teams except the top five teams in each grade division. The divisions started from third grade straight through college and senior open division.
There are three categories in a Double-Dutch competition. They are compulsory, speed, freestyle and there also tricks. The compulsory event requires tricks and moves. The freestyle category can get very creative, with handsprings and routines that start with one jumper leaping over the shoulders of another, all while those ropes are turning. Points are awarded for each successful move and vary depending on the difficulty of the move. Speed is an event that is pure adrenaline, a mixture of exhilaration and fear. Getting through 120 grueling seconds (2 minutes) of jumping without hitting the rope, and you can score a lot of points. One miss means fewer jumps, which means fewer points. Judges count the number of times a jumpers left foot successfully misses the rope, and awards points foe each. If you don’t do well in speed, freestyle and compulsory, scores won’t matter much.
The second day is the finals where the top five teams compete for top honors. The high school team consisting of LaQuasha Brown, Deandrea Jordan, Dominique Harris and Camila Ensley; held the top speed for both days jumping an amazing 410 steps (counting only the left foot) in the two minute speed test or 820 steps (if you count both feet) in 2 minutes.
