On The Beach
....And Finally, Spring! If this past winter and spring is at all indicative of the kind of summer we will have, then it will surely be a long hot steamy one! And if there’s any consolation, we are soooo fortunate to live by the beach! However, if we could only be able to enjoy it without the fear of tickets! It has certainly become so ludicrous! What would be even more ludicrous is if this current Mayor i s ever re-elected. Despite the fact that his poll numbers are the lowest for any Mayor since Mayor Beame, Mayor Bloomberg has the height of audacity to announce he has every intention of running again! He just doesn’t seem to get it! He is obviously so out of touch with New Yorkers. From the ever-increasing taxes to the further reduction in services to the current ticket blitz, we cannot afford this Mayor a second term.
***Clinton for Mayor?! Hmmmm! That’s an exciting thought! Although it would seem unlikely that he would mount a campaign that would eclipse Hillary in her expected run for the Presidency. Indeed, being Mayor of New York would certainly be fun for the fun-loving former President; but there is one thing that matters more to the Clinton Partnership and that’s breaking ground and making history...and it’s Hillary’s turn. Although I don’t favor her politics, I find her to be extremely fascinating as perhaps the most formidable candidate on the political stage. As for the next Mayor of New York, I only hope Giulliani will decide to run again!
***Congratulations to Tom and Ellen McDonagh and their partner, Joe Sullivan, the new Proprietors of The Blackwater Inn. May you have many successful and pleasurable years in an establishment that has been so much a part of the Rockaway culture. After twenty-five years, Chris and Mary Bowles have decided to retire and spend more time with their family in the town they love so well. They were host to many wonderful memories and occasions. I extend my best wishes to them.
***Get well wishes to Dennis Hazel. I hope you’re out and about real soon!
***How is it possible that the new Duane Reade store is able to operate with a temporary C of O.? Oh, that’s right, this is Rockaway where we seem to make up the rules as we go along! In Rockaway, "temporary" seems to last forever! As in, the "temporary" C of O that the Lawrence Hotel had for fifteen years! And those unsightly electrical poles on Beach 116 Street? They were to have been "temporary". That was tewnty-three years ago! I’m sure I could go on and on....
***Now that we finally have nice weather, get on your bike or rollerblades and ride up to Fort Tilden and while you’re there, treat yourself to one of the Rockaway Theatre Company’s summer shows!
***I was out of town a couple of weekends ago and the strangest thing happened. I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but it happened to me. I was talking to a friend about someone whom I hadn’t seen in a very long time; and at precisely the same exact moment as I was talking about this person, they were talking to someone about me! It touched me and made me smile.
***See you...On the Beach!
