Some streets in Rockaway are getting name changes soon, in an effort to honor local heroes.

Councilman James Sanders Jr. submitted the official requests, which have been approved by the City Council and signed by the Mayor.

Beach 25 Street between Rockaway Freeway and Camp Road will be named "Hon. Pauline Rhodd-Cummings Drive". Former Assemblywoman Cummings, who died on January 27 2002, had a long history of service to Far Rockaway. She was the former head of the Deerfield Area Association; a former member of Community Board 14; a former Vice President of the 101 Precinct Council and Executive Board Member of the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation. She was the first woman of Caribbean descent to be elected to the New York State Assembly.

Bayfield Avenue from Beach 65 Beach 72 street will be named "FF Stephen P. Russell Memorial Drive." The late firefighter was a resident of Arverne from when he was 18 months old until the date of his death, September 11, 2001.He died wile trying to save lives in the North Tower during the terrorist attacks.

Waterview Street, between Bayswater area and Coldspring road will be renamed "Gloria Warshofsky Memorial Place. A former president of the Bayswater Civic Association and longtime member of Community Board 14, Warshofsky died on January 23, 2003.
