Graybeards Play Host: Harlem Wizards Wow A Packed House
The St. Francis de Sales gym was packed on Saturday, May 31 as kids from 3 to 73 years old came to enjoy a basketball showdown featuring the world famous Harlem Wizards against an assortment of local competitors. A collection of high school boys and girls, college players, a pro player (Ryan McCormack was the Graybeard ringer of the day), the Graybeard "A" team, local celebrities and guests each took turns taking it to the Wizards.
With the high school ladies up first, everyone got the idea that it was going to be a fun-filled day. Before the opening tip, the Harlem Wizard players were making sure they knew who everybody was guarding as they each shouted out "I GOT MY WOMAN!" The ladies did a very respectable job as they hung in against the Wizards and trailed just 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. The high school boys were up next and also demonstrated their ability to play the game of roundball. Their tenacity caught the Wizards by surprise and the hometown crowd was impressed with the local talent. The Wizards had to turn up their effort in order to keep up with the local lads. Translation: The Wizards responded with many high-flying dunks.
Halftime entertainment included a game of drop the pass when part of the game includes the whole crowd chanting: "YOU ARE OUT!" Competition was tough. But one by one, the contestants were eliminated until there were only three left. The three finalists were all 4 years old or younger and it looked like they would all get to hear the chant. As luck would have it though, the ball was passed to a feisty little tot, Kathleen Daly, down for the day from Old Greenwich, CT. She not only caught the ball, but as the Harlem Wizard running the contest turned away from her, she passed the ball back to him and it bounced off his leg and dropped to the floor causing the crowd to chant out loud "YOU ARE OUT!" It was classic!
The Graybeard "A" team and company opened the second half in fine fashion as they pulled away to a very respectable 15 point lead 76 - 61 (note: they were spotted 10 points). It woke up the Wizards as they upped the tempo and quickly pulled ahead for good at 84-81. The fourth period featured some men from the community who volunteer their time in programs such as C.Y.O. and the Little League. Marty Andresen was a crowd favorite and looked very sporty in white socks.
The Graybeards want to thank everyone who participated in this fun filled day and especially want to thank those who came out to support the event. Our next family/community event will be a fun run tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 25th.
