Summer Music in the Park
The Sunset Picnic Concert series has for years been a popular summer fixture for Rockaway residents. Every year, people from all over Queens and even further afield, flock to Fort Tilden to listen to good music out in the fresh air, with the lovely setting of a national park in the background. Dancing is also a frequent part of the evening and fun is generally had by all.
Sponsored by the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, the season begins on June 28 with The Roadhouse Band, an excellent group from nearby Long Island, on the country western night. Country lovers descend on the park to enjoy themselves with their friends and their favorite music in one of the series’ best-attended events.
Next, on July 13, the Long Island Pops Orchestra pays a visit to entertain us with everything from classics to Broadway. Conductor Dean Karahalis has a terrific reputation and has played the series before with great success.
A tribute to Frank Sinatra is the next event, with Jerry Cardone and the Danny Vincent Orchestra playing their way through Sinatra’s repertoire on July 27.
But possibly the best known event is Cherish the Ladies, the traditional Irish band, which incidentally, is all women. One of the most celebrated Irish musical groups in America, it was founded fourteen years ago and has played all over America and Europe. They also have several records out and have won awards in Ireland and Scotland. The New York Times attended one of their past outings at the series and claims it "expands the annals of Irish music in America…the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious." This year Cherish the Ladies will be playing on August 10.
Finally, Ball in the House, a pop group that styles themselves after Nsync and the Backstreet Boys will be singing acappella on August 24th, wrapping up a varied and interesting season of music.
All of the events take place on Sundays on 6:00pm. Call for reservations at 718-474-6760.
