St. John’s Home Youth Team Launched
Upon learning that the budget for the City’s Annual Youth Employment Program would be seriously cut, St. John’s Home knew they had to think fast. With the summer of 2003 approaching, dozens of boys at St. John’s would be looking for an opportunity to stay productively occupied and earn some spending money.
A few St. John’s boys have already secured jobs; others will be attending summer school programs, and some will be involved in volunteer activities. But many were counting on the Summer Youth Employment for gainful employment.
With this in mind, St. John’s has designed a program called "St. John’s Works." The object of the program is twofold; to give the young men an opportunity for meaningful and productive summer involvement and to offer to the community a labor force available on an hourly, daily, weekly, or full summer basis.
In the past, community folks have hired St. John’s boys for many tasks, from raking leaves to shoveling snow to a variety of cleaning and moving projects. Perhaps you have some project or job that could use help; e.g., cleaning a basement, garage, or attic; gardening and outdoor work, help with moving; dog walking, etc.
If you have some work for which you would like to hire a St. John’s resident, or if you have any inquiries or suggestions about the program, feel free to call Brother Tom Trager at 718-945-2800, ext. 200.
