Faithful Set Two Local Meetings
Recently, Rt. Reverend Thomas Daily, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, reversed his original ruling that had prohibited The Voice of the Faithful from meeting on church property. Prior to the lifting of the ban, the group had held several meetings in the American Legion Hall in Rockaway.
Responding to this positive response by the clergy, members of the Voice of the Faithful in Rockaway will hold two informational meetings during June seeking to foster interest and membership in this religious group.
On Monday, June 9, at 7 p.m., the group will meet at St. Francis de Sales Church, Beach 129 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. On Monday, June 16, at 7 p.m., the group will meet at St. Virgilius Church, Noel Road (near Cross Bay Blvd.) in Broad Channel.
Speakers will include members of the Rockaway VOTF Steering Committee.
"We are delighted that the bishop will now welcome members of the Voice of the Faithful to meet in our own parish facilities," said area coordinator Anne Heslin. "As we say in our Mission Statement, we seek to ‘Keep the faith, change the church.’
Citing the message of Vatican II, area coordinator Vera Powers reminds Catholics that the laity are supposed to play an active role in the governance of the Church. "Perhaps we needed the wake-up call of recent scandals plaguing the Church to remind us of our right and responsibility to play a more active part in how the Church operates," said Ms. Powers.
All are welcome at either, or both, of the meetings. Future VOTF meetings will be held in the other Catholic churches in the area.
