Goodbye to Alex Romero.

RAA hates to see him go, but we wish him much luck. Alex Romero, who was District Manager of the Breezy Point Unit/Gateway National Recreation Area, has been promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Prince William National Forest in Prince William, Virginia. Alex was a great friend of the arts in Fort Tilden. He actively reached out to all park partners, including Rockaway Artists Alliance, Rockaway Music and Arts Council and the Rockaway Theatre Company. He nurtured those relationships and was always receptive to new ideas for bringing arts and culture to the park and to the community. Alex supported RAA exhibits, programs and events that included Movies by Moonlight, Halloween Fright Night, and Camp kidsmART.

Gone, but not forgotten and certainly not out of the picture. Alex will be the same lover of the arts in Virginia that he has been in Rockaway.

Hello to Rita Mullally –

Welcome to Rita Mullally, who has become Acting District Manager of the Breezy Point Unit. Actually, Rita is not new to us. She was Chief of Interpretation at the Headquarters Unit for Gateway National Recreation Area. She wishes to say, "My time away from the field has made me look at things in a different light and has energized me in handling the responsibilities of this position. Alex has done a remarkable job cultivating the relationships with the park partners and I am looking forward to continuing what Alex started and to strengthening the relationships. As a resident of this peninsula, I am very much in tune with what is happening here."

Thanks to Billy Taylor for the Wonderful, Wonderlandish Mad Tea Party he threw for the installation of Geoff Rawling’s fantastical 70-foot artwork at Billy’s auto customizing business, "Einstein’s," in Linden, New Jersey. Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, et. al. stepped through the Looking Glass and haven’t been seen since.

The next RAA general meeting will be Monday, June 9 at 7:30 PM in Building T-149, Fort Tilden, Gateway National Recreation Area. The guest presenters will be members of the RAA Creative Writing Workshop and instructor Christine Mullally, who will read the best of the works produced in the class. Each reading will be limited to 3-5 minutes. The caliber of work produced in the class is impressive.

RAA’s 4th annual juried multimedia arts event will run Sept 20-Oct 26, 2003. Calls to artists will be going out soon. This is an open show that includes visual, literary and performing artists. An exhibition of digital art will be a part of ARTSPLASH 2003. The deadline for submission of work: received by August 4, 2003. Watch for the Call to Artists.

Movies by Moonlight is coming! Friday, June 20 & Saturday, June 21 @ 8:45 PM. "Young Frankenstein" & "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

Teaser -What actor stars in both movies? Answer (and many other wonderful things) next week.
