What’s Open, What’s Not

The city’s Department of Parks has announced that there will be a number of beach closings until July 4, when an expanded lifeguard force is expected to be on the job.

The following beaches will be open on weekends: until July 4: Beach 9 to Beach 13; Beach 15 to Beach 25; Beach 58 to Beach 61; Beach 114 to Beach 149. On weekdays, the following beaches will be open until July 4: Beach 9 to Beach 13; Beach 15 to Beach 20; Beach 58 to Beach 61; Beach 84 to Beach 98; Beach 105 to Beach 107; Beach 114 to Beach 135 and Beach 145 to Beach 149.

The following beaches are closed permanently for the summer: Beach 28 to Beach 38 (erosion problems); Beach 26 to Beach 28 (Piping Plover habitats); Beach 38 to Beach 58 (Piping Plover habitats) and Beach 61 to Beach 67 (Piping Plover habitats).

All of the beach openings depend on lifeguard availability, Parks officials say. They hope that the influx of lifeguards when schools close in July will result in most of Rockaway’s beaches being open for the remainder of the summer subsequent to July 4.
