Nab Two Students With Gun At MS 53
Two fourteen-year-old Middle School 53 students were arrested last week for bringing a loaded handgun into the Far Rockaway school.
Police sources say that they were called to the school after a special education teacher noticed two of her students passing the handgun back and forth.
The teacher saw the .22 caliber weapon and asked the students to give it to her. One of the boys put the gun into his pocket. The teacher asked the student who did not have the gun to leave the room, according to one report. She then reportedly took the gun away from the other student.
She then notified school authorities, who called the police.
The two-shot derringer contained one live round, according to police.
Both boys, who remain unidentified because of their age, were charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
School officials refused to comment on the incident other than to say that it was under investigation.
Sources at the new Department of Education, however, reported that the two boys received only a two-day suspension from the school due to the incident.
