World Champions Karate Center Tops The Region


The A.A.U. Region I Karate Championships were held on May 3, 2003 at the Hudson Valley Community College at Troy, N.Y. The 500+ athletes from N.Y., New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine had a great day of Kumite (sparring), Kata (forms), and Kobudo (weapons) competition. The World Champions K.P. team dominated the competition as it has often done in the past. The 35 competitions garnered 47 gold, 23 silver and 15 bronze medals. Several athletes swept their division with gold in all their events. These included Justin Pine, Frank Laino, Stephen Douglin, Paige Whelen, Crystal Woods, Regina Frain and Diamond De Martino. (The next stop for these athletes is the National AAU Karate Championships at Winston-Salem North Crolina.)
