Sharon Mary Bien
P.S. 225 Teacher

Sharon Mary Bien, who taught sixth grade at Public School 225 in Rockaway, died after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident earlier this week. She was 38.

Bien was born to Peter and Kathleen (nee Burns) Bien, in Passaic, N.J., on June 13, 1964. She graduated from B-R West High School in 1982. She was also known as a musician, artist, and photographer. She wrote, produced, and directed plays annually for her students at school. In 2002, she was nominated for the Disney America Teachers Award. Bien was a member of the Brooklyn Working Artists Coalition and SIRENS Motorcycle Club.

She is survived by her parents Peter and Kathleen Bien; sister Paula Bien of Laceyville; brother Peter Bien of Bridgewater; aunts and uncles Mary Johnson, of Bridgewater, Peggie Bouse of Wyalusing, Pa., Joanne and Ignacy Dabek of Wyalusing, Pa., and James and Anne Bouse of Belevidere, N.J.; nine cousins; special friends Hope Parisi, Amy Wallach, Hope Howley, and Cheryl Stewart, with whom she resided for four years in N.Y.

Family and friends may call today, Friday May 23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Bongiovi Funeral Home, on the corner of Bell Avenue and Anderson Street, Raritan, N.J., 908-725-1887.

Funeral services will begin with a visitation at 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by an 11 a.m. service at Bongiovi's. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made at the funeral home in her memory to be used at a later date for her students at P.S. 225.

Loretta Elizabeth Holmes
Para-Associate

Loretta Elizabeth Holmes, a Rockaway resident for more than three decades, passed away May 11. She was 62.

Holmes, who was born in Baltimore, Md., worked as a para-associate.

She is survived by her husband Augustus Roosevelt Holmes; sons Augustus R. Holmes, Jr., and Kevin Holmes; grandchildren Marques, Nicole, and Tavon; daughter-in-law Erika; brothers-in-law Oliver Holmes, and George Van Duyne; sister-in-law Frances Bartlett, Melvina Van Duyne, and Delores Holmes; godchild Brenda Dillahont; and an aunt, Rosie Bullock.

Funeral arrangements by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. A mass was held at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel.

Interment is at Calverton National Cemetery.

John L. Farrington
Letter Carrier

John L. Farrington, an Atlantic Beach Resident with family in Rockaway, passed away at Long Beach Hospital, on May 19.

Farrington, who worked as a letter carrier, was the father of John, Carol Roldan (Edward), Jill Sarnelli (Tom), and Margaret Farrington. He had 8 children, and 2 grandchildren.

A service was held at the Lawrence Funeral Chapel yesterday, interment will be today at Greenfield Cemetery, in Hempstead.

Moses Johnson
Construction Worker

Moses Johnson, a longtime Rockaway resident, passed away on May 15. She was 64.

Johnson, who was born in Ala., was a parishioner at the Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother Annie Smith Johnson; brother Matthew Johnson; sisters Daisy, and Baby Girl Johnson.

He is survived by his wife Ozell Johnson; daughters Randee George, Atiya Johnson, and Rachel Binger; son Dennis Johnson; grandchildren Kareem Johnson, Olivia Binger, Desirae and James Binger, Deven Allen, Shanell and Lawrence Binger; father Matthew Johnson; brothers Arnestne, Jimmy Thorman, and James Johnson; brothers-in-law Aaron and Willie Conner, and many others.

Funeral arrangements by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. A mass was held at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel.

Interment will be at the Humble Zion Baptist Church, in Midway, Ala.

Geraldine Skelly Maher (nee Garvey)
F.B.I. Employee

Geraldine Skelly Maher (nee Garvey) died suddenly on May 8, in Durham, NC, while on a family trip.

A resident of Breezy Point, and formerly of Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan, and affectionately known as "Geri," she was born on May 29, 1918, in Park Slope Brooklyn to Catherine and Joseph Garvey. She attended St. Savior's High School, and worked for many years at the F.B.I. where she met and married Joseph Skelly in 1947. Joseph predeceased her in 1975.

Maher later worked for Printing Industries of Metropolitan NY, as Director of Education.

She was the mother of Patricia Groarke of Garden City, Long Island, and Joe Skelly, Jr., of NYC, and mother-in-law to Edward Groarke, Esq. and Barbara Niven Skelly. She was the grandmother of JT, Brendan and Gillian Groarke. Sister of the late Jean Hamilton, and aunt to Geraldine Flemming and Al Hamilton.

Maher was active in the Breezy Point Garden Club, Golden Age Group, Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, and taught CCD to Catholic youngsters at St. Thomas More RC Church.

Reposing at Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas More, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, in Brooklyn.

John J. McGonigle
Carpenter, BOE Employee

John J. McGonigle, a Rockaway resident for nearly 50 years, passed away May 19.

McGonigle, who was born in Donegal, Ireland, served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a carpenter, and for the New York City Board of Education. McGonigle was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima Church, and belonged to Ancient Order of Hibernians division 21, and was the past Vice President of the Knights of Columbus Rockaway Council.

He is survived by his wife Sally (Nee Doonan) McGonigle; daughter Marylou Piccone; son Sean McGonigle; and brother Patrick McGonigle, of Ireland.

Deacon David Lee Washington, Sr.
Butcher

Deacon David Lee Walsh, who lived in the Rockaways for more than 20 years, passed away May 3. He was 66.

Walsh, who was born in Orangeburg, S.C., worked as a butcher. He was affiliated with Emanuel A.M.E. Church, in S.C., and was a Senior Choir Member, then a member of the Greater Ebeneyer Baptist Assembly, and served as Assistant Chairman of the Deacon Board. He was also affiliated with Titus Lodge #20.

Walsh is survived by his wife Delores; children Daniel, David, Jr., Tony Matthew, Trena, Chandra Thornton, Darnell, William, and Corine; sister Delores Bowman-Butler (Frankie), aunt Rebecca Slaughter; eight sister-in-laws; and eight brothers in law; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. A mass was held at Greater Ebeneyer Baptist Assembly, in Brooklyn.

Interment was at All Saints Cemetery, in Great Neck.
