Relay For Life Set For June 7
The American Cancer Society is inviting Rockaway residents to pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to join a Relay For Life, which will be held at Beach Channel High School on June 7 and June 8.
Relay for life is an "overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out and walk or run around the school’s track, relay style, to fight cancer," says Silvia Alvarez, a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society.
Last year, hundreds gathered for the event, most of them spending the chilly night walking and holding a community party.
In addition, the Cancer Society invites those who have survived cancer to celebrate their triumph over the disease by participating in the inspirational "survivors lap," which open the relay.
A candlelight ceremony honors all of those who have lost their lives to the disease.
hose interested can purchase "luminaries" at the event and can inscribe those candles with the name of the person or people of their choice. Those luminaries will be lit as the sun falls, in what those who have participated previously call a "very moving ceremony."
