Broad Channel To Host American Legion Parade
The American Legion Post 1404 will be hosting the Eighty-fifth Annual Queens County Convention Parade. It will take place on Friday evening, June 6, at 8 p.m., starting at the All Veterans Memorial on 17 Road Park in Broad Channel.
Prior to the start of the parade at 7 p.m., the Post is planning to honor the memory of the five veterans who never returned home from Korea alive, to help celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of cessation of hostilities in Korea.
Those veterans to be honored are Walter Gross (POW, 7/3/51), Joseph DePietro (KIA, 10/10/51), Ralph Mitola (KIA, 8/1/52), James Farrell (KIA, 11/10/52), and T. August (KIA, 11/27/52).
The Department Commander Fang Wong will present a certificate from the American Battle Monument Commission.
Congressman Anthony Weiner will present the Republic of South Korea, War Service Medal to members of each family.
Ben Weisbroth, Assistant Director of New York State Division of Veteran Affairs, will present the New York State Conspicuous Service Star Award.
Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer will present a proclamation from the New York State Assembly.
A proclamation from the New York City Council will be presented by Councilman Joseph Addabbo.
Following the award ceremony, the annual convention parade will step off and proceed north on Crossbay Boulevard to the American Legion Hall. After the parade there will be refreshments and music for your entertainment.
It is requested that all Korean War veterans attend this ceremony so that they may be recognized on this fiftieth anniversary celebration.
