RBVL Volleyball Season Begins May 21 By Joe McGivney

On 4/30 the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League held its last pre-season meeting at the Kerry Hills Pub. The meeting was well attended, began promptly and ended quickly, which left plenty of time for socializing. (Some revelers took this to the extreme level, staying until well after midnight.) Some captains could not make the meeting but called in ahead of time to take care of business.

President Patty Moule was a little surprised at one particular call when Noelle curtly hung up the phone on her. That was until she found out that Noelle was actually taking care of her volleyball team while going into labor. Rocky didn’t think that was much of an excuse. Congratulations Noelle! Welcome Molly!

Important rules and new rule changes were discussed at the outset, followed by an explanation of the new four-division set-up the league will be incorporating this season. The league’s goal is to have the most evenly matched teams in each division so that each week will be filled with exciting, action-packed matches, not forfeits and blowouts. Treasurer Bugsy Goldberg collected entry fees, uniform orders and preliminary rosters and sent the captains on their way (to the bar).

Since that night, the Executive Board has been working furiously to pull all the final elements together before opening day. Teams who paid on time and submitted uniform orders will have their shirts on opening day. The record number of teams (28) has been divided into what should be very competitive groups. The top two units will have six teams each, all of which are familiar names to everyone who has played in the league before. The bottom two will be mixed with veterans and newcomers who mix the competitive and the social aspects of beach volleyball.

Divisions will be posted, schedules will be handed out, uniforms will be distributed and play will begin on Wednesday, 5/21 at Riis Park. Nets will be available for set-up at 6:00 PM. A seasonal kick-off party back at the Kerry Hills Pub will follow this exhibition night. Last year this was one of the best party nights of the year, so don’t miss it. In the event of rain, everyone should arrive early at Kerry Hills, where all of the official league business will be conducted.

On 5/28 the matches will intensify as teams begin to vie for four championships. The schedule will be comprised of 11 regular season games, including one position week. Once again, remind your teammates that the playoffs and championships will be played on Saturday, 8/9 during the day.

•If you have any questions please call Patty Moule at 718-318-7770 before 9 PM. (However, if you must call after 9 PM please leave a message on Patty’s work voice mail at 212-604-7087.)

See you on 5/21. Let the games begin!
