Pickles & Pies Win Their Second RLL Game

By Coach Joie Fadde

Pickles & Pies, in the second game of their season, once again faced tough opposition but were able to grab another late inning lead and hold on for a 14-9 victory over Rockaway Irish Boys.

The game began with Maria Sanz on the mound for Pickles & Pies and started off just like the first game of the season, with the lead off batter for the opposition being walked and coming around to score the first run of the game. In the bottom half of the first inning, Pickles & Pies scored three runs with Arielle Zabala, Christina Salinas, and Genevieve Prigge crossing home.

Rockaway Irish Boys came roaring back in the second inning, adding three runs of their own and taking a 4-3 lead. Due to a sore shoulder, the Pickles & Pies starting pitcher was lifted and replaced by Milagros Clarke who closed out the inning. During their half of the second, Pickles & Pies were held scoreless.

The third inning was uneventful for both teams who failed to plate any runs but the action picked up again in the fourth inning with another lead off walk coming around to score for Rockaway Irish Boys. Pickles & Pies once again had their bats come alive in the bottom of the fourth with Liberty Calakos and Arielle Zabala coming home to score on a Christina Salinas double. Genevieve Prigge reached on a fielder’s choice and was driven home my Maria Sanz for the last run of the inning, giving Pickles & Pies a 7-5 lead.

To begin the fifth inning, Milagros Clarke got the first two batters she faced to ground out, but then gave up three straight walks to load the bases. Genevieve Prigge was brought in to close out the inning, but gave up one run after allowing a single. The inning ended with a force out at third.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pickles & Pies bats remained hot with Dorilyn Fortis leading off with a double, Tiffanie Carman followed with a single and both were driven home on Tara Iannotti’s double. After two strikeouts, Shannon Battle drove Tara home for the third run of the inning and a 10-6 lead.

The top of the sixth inning saw two more lead off walks come around to score for Rockaway Irish Boys, bringing them to within two runs of evening the game before being shut down. During the bottom of the sixth inning, Pickles & Pies put the game out of reach with Arielle Zabala hitting her second home run of the season and Maria Sanz getting Genevieve Prigge home. Kelly Carman then hit a two run homer to give Pickles & Pies a 14-8 lead. The Rockaway Irish Boys were only able to get one more run home in the seventh for a final score of 14-9.

This was another well played game and we would like to give Rockaway Irish Boys lots of credit, as they were playing short staffed but never gave up. Good luck during the rest of the season. The game ball for Pickles & Pies went to Tara Iannotti for getting her first two RBI’s of the season off her first double of the season.
