Weiner and Staff Lace Up Sneakers
Representative Anthony Weiner’s (who represent the west end of Rockaway and parts of Brooklyn in the U.S. House of Representatives) is gonna lace up his sneakers and take a big step for women’s sports this week. And his entire staff is going to do it with him by participating in Sneaker Day, a national initiative designed to raise funds for women’s sports and exercise programs.
"Everybody knows how important it is for kids to get the healthy exercise playing sports provides. The problem is that girls and women are a lot less likely to be physically active than boys the same age," Weiner recently told reporters. For that reason, the Women’s Sports Foundation established "Sneaker Day," a day in which participating employers allow their female employees to come to work in comfortable sneakers, in return for a $5 donation to be used for women’s sports and education programs. According to Weiner, it’s a fun, simple way to help girls get into healthy habits and make sure that exercise becomes a life long endeavor.
Weiner and his entire staff will participate in Sneaker Day on Friday.
"My mother always told me not to wear sneakers with my suit but, in this case, I think she’ll understand," said Rep. Weiner. "If it’s going to help girls get healthy my entire office is going to just do it, and I hope other workplaces throughout the City will join us."
Sneaker Day is a national initiative of the Women’s Sports Foundation, and is spearheaded locally by the New York Women’s Agenda, a collaboration of over 100 local women’s organizations.
