Vets Invited To Information Day
The Vietnam Veterans of America will host a Veterans Information Day on the Rockaway peninsula on June 7. The event will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall (333 Beach 90 Street) from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Pat Toro, the president of the Vietnam vets organization, reports that this will be the first such information day for veterans of all wars ever held in Rockaway. The event is held yearly in northern Queens.
Despite the fact that the information day is being hosted by the Vietnam vet’s group, it is open to veterans, spouses and eligible dependents of men and women who fought in any American conflict, from World War II to the present conflict in the Gulf.
"We welcome vets and their families from any conflict," Toro says. "Counselors will be available to answer all of their questions and concerns.
Information will be available on such issues as VA compensation and pension claims, health care enrollment, document retrieval, benefit information and employment opportunities. Accredited counselors and service reps from the Veteran’s Administration will be on hand to answer questions.
The information day is cosponsored by a number of city and state legislators, including Councilman Joe Addabbo, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and State Senator Malcolm Smith. Other cosponsors of the event include George Basher of the New York State Division of Veterans Affairs and the Vietnam Veterans Assistance Fund.
