Dead Bird is ‘Odd Duck’ for Rockaway
This Northern Gannet, which was photographed on Beach 148 Street, surprised National Parks Service employees, because this type of bird is not a frequent visitor to the Rockaways. In fact, these migratory birds typically fly far off the ocean coastline, and only rest on land in the region where they breed—several hundred miles northeast of Maine.
Occasionally, on very clear days, they can be seen from the shores of Breezy Point. Gannets are known for their impressive fish diving—they can plunge up to 30 feet below the surface.
The bird was easily identified because of the coloration on the back of its neck, and its black wing ends.
Thanks to Ben Lampert, who spotted the bird and brought it to The Wave’s attention.
