Fisheads Destroy Landsowne RFC In 47-12 Romp By Allan Shaw

Last weekend, the Bronx rugby club, Lansdowne traveled to Rockaway for a match in nearby Fort Tilden. The Bronx club, has been one of the more up and down teams in the league. Lansdowne has been in Div 2, volunteered for Div 1, beaten and regulated to Div3 and now are trying to move back into Div 2. A division played competitively by the Fisheads for the past 13 years. Lansdowne is missing a few key players such as; Nick "I’m an All-star, but can’t make the trip" Brucella, Grand pu-bar Sean McCarthy and several backs and forwards who are gone: rebuilding their homeland, Ireland.

After a late start, Rockaway quickly moved ahead with a lineout to McCann, brought down to a driving Mike "the Russian" for a sideline scamper & little duke move on the opposing winger. Next was Oakie, for his weekly forearm to the face try and McCann taking a muffed play-pass from Kermit for a 10meter gang tackle try, by the post. Wayne Fox converted 3 of 4 for a halftime lead of 21-0. "Stony Brook" Kevin was denied a corner flag try when a novice referee, Robert Johanson, miss the play. Hopefully, the referee society will have their fitness program up and running for the fall season.

The second half was dominated by the Fisheads as; Phil Tufano, Tyrone Sperling, John McCann and Kevin Wrafter all scored.

With a B game unlikely, the Fishead’s replaced a few players with some eager B’s roaming the sideline. Jeff and Trevor made an good impression. Lansdowne was able to put a few points on the scoreboard before the whistle blew. Final 47-12.

The Rockaway Fishead’s record is 5-1 this spring. Today, the Fisheads play in the Long Island Tournament in Lido Beach. On May 17 (Family Day) the Fisheads play HOME against the Village Lions for a season ending finally ; 1pm.

Rugger pluggers:

If anyone is cold this spring, stop by Tyrone’s Apt/Sauna above the Rugby Clubhouse. The heat is always at 90 degrees.

SCRUMHALF NEEDED: Kermit will miss this week’s tournament due to a second cousin’s (once removed) /wife’s/ brother’s/step child’s birthday party.

Matt "Head" Frank has been MIA for several months. His attendance proves he is following in brothers, Phil & Andy’s footsteps as being the most unreliable rugby players/family that has ever played for Rockaway RFC or he just couldn’t make the commute from Breezy Point. You decide.

Mother Nature has promised grass on the field by the last match of the season.

Jim "Surf Rat" Brady was beside himself when Momma Brady placed his wet suits & surfboard in the "please take" bin at the annual yard sale. She though the items were broken due to Jim’s inability to surf.

Clubhouse news:

Mark your calendar again: Sat., May 17th is Family Day at the Rugby Clubhouse. 4pm: after a home match against the Village Lions RFC. *Open house, kiddie rides & games, BBQ, Horseshoes,PETTING ZOO and now climb Mount Ooch., plus much, much more. Invited your friends. Rob OMEX, a representative from the Tubridy clan, Chowderhead, Jim Mullen Jr., the Nichterns, Andy Marley, Ray Martin and my college bud, "Duke" Fody will all make an appearance after the match.
