Give Our Vets A Rockaway Welcome Home
When Rockaway hosted a "Support Our Troops" rally last month, a few hundred people showed up. Most of them were veterans themselves or the families of those then fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now that the actual fighting has ended, many of our servicemen and women will be returning home. We are not sure how many of them are from Rockaway, but we suspect that it is a fairly significant number. We think that Rockaway should do something to honor those residents who fought so hard to protect all of us from terrorism. The National Night Out Against Crime is traditionally held in August and includes all sorts of ceremonies as well as a fireworks display. What better time to honor our military heroes as we honored our first responders last year. Perhaps a short parade or a ceremony with a presentation of some sort is in order. We are sure that the Chamber of Commerce (which now, unfortunately, has lots of expertise in organizing ceremonies such as this) and the precinct community councils can get together with our local politicians to get this done. The armed forces members have now done so much for us, it is time for us to do something for them.
