Sets Summer Youth Program ...

Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation’s (RDRC) Youth Education and Employment Training Programs’ (YEETP) division will once again administer the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). It will commence June 30, 2003 and run until August 15, 2003.

RDRC is working with the New York City Department of Employment (DOE) and the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) in preparation for the SYEP. The program is essential in providing employment opportunities to youth in the Rockaways.

Last year, between DOE and DYCD, RDRC was able to provide summer job opportunities to 773 young people. This year however the City of New York is confronted with budget cuts and shortfalls.

Because of this, RDRC and other community-based organizations that administer SYEP and similar services during the summer, are encountering drastic reductions in the number of positions available for the young people throughout the City. As of the writing of this article, we have only received 34 slots from DOE and we haven’t received any word from DYCD as to their number of summer job slots.

Applications for the DOE SYEP are now available at RDRC, 1920 Mott Avenue, Second Floor, Far Rockaway, NY.
