Jamaica Bay Guardian Christens New Boat
After numerous whacks with a rather resilient champagne bottle to her port side, the champagne flowed, and the Oystercatcher I was christened Wednesday.
Oystercatcher I is Jamaica Bay Guardian Don Riepe’s new boat. Arriving just in time for the summer boating season, she’s a twenty-two-footer, with a sleek Honda outboard that can push her through the water at speeds up to forty knots.
Riepe said it was a special day for Jamaica Bay, and that he is looking forward to using her.
Marcia T. Fowle of the New York City Audubon Society had the honors of swinging the cloth-wrapped bottle of bubbly.
The christening took place at the Broad Channel office of the American Littoral Society, on West 9 Road. Representatives from the National Parks Service, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation the, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and others attended.
