Gateway Seeks Summer Volunteers
Gateway National Recreation Area, the "National Park in Your Backyard," is looking for some part-time Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP’s) to support the visitor services desk at Fort Tilden. The position is entirely indoors, and involves mostly handling inquiries from visitors over the phone and in person. The majority of visitor contacts will involve assisting with
parking permit information, providing general information on Fort Tilden’s natural and cultural history, and explaining available visitor services.
The visitor services desk is located on the first floor of Building 1 in
Fort Tilden, accessible by car or the Green Line Bus. The normal operating hours for the desk is from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day during the
summer season. It is not necessary for VIP’s to work more than one shift a week, and opportunities to work a half-shift (4 hours) will be available.
During special events at Fort Tilden, opportunities may be available to staff the desk after 6 p.m. Volunteers-In-Parks is the nationwide program authorized by Congress that allows the National Park Service to accept and utilize voluntary help and services from the public. Tens of thousands of people volunteer at their local National Parks each year.
