Addabbo Sets Series Of Library Rallies

Proposed cuts in library service in his district prompts Councilman Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. to schedule rallies at 32nd Council District libraries. Rallies will take place at the following branch library sites within the 32nd Council District:

Ozone Park Library - Monday, May 12; Peninsula (B.92 St) - Tuesday, May 13; Broad Channel - Wednesday, May 14; Seaside (B. 116th St.) - Thursday, May 15; Howard Beach - Friday, May 16.

All rallies will take place from 3:30 P.M.- 4:30 p.m.

"The Queensborough Public Library System serves the 2.2 million residents of Queens, among them the more than 150,000 people who live here in my district," Addabbo said. "They borrow books, use the libraries for research and internet access, and make them the community hubs they are supposed to be. Library usage in Queens is among the highest in the country. The mayor’s proposed service cuts for my district , as well as for the rest of Queens, will impinge on the quality of life for all of us, whether toddler, teen, or senior."

Of particular concern to Councilman Addabbo is loss of Saturday service. Many of our high schools do not have adequate library facilities due to severe overcrowding. School schedules and time-consuming commutes from high schools are often not conducive to giving students the opportunity to utilize branch libraries other than on Saturdays.

All segments of the population are served by our branch libraries and we must continue to provide world-class services in our world-class library system. "We must preserve the vital role played by books, reading, and literacy in our communities."

Addabbo urges all Rockaway residents to take part in the rallies to protest library service cuts.
