On The Beach With Beverly Baxter Remarkable Women

With Beverly Baxter
Remarkable Women

I am often awed and amazed by some of the truly extraordinary and remarkable women in our midst. Although they are sometimes celebrated, much of their efforts on their community’s behalf are often overlooked. Their motives are mercilessly suspect; and although they stand to take the lead on a given issue, they are quite relentlessly criticized. Yet they still continue on...doing what they do best as a community benefits by the presence of their unique talents, dedication, and capacity to give. They are women who I have known personally as well as on a myriad of levels; yet their essence continues to leave a profound impression upon me. They are women who are an example of triumph over much adversity and their lives have been a personal source of strength and inspiration.

Among this distinguished roster are women like Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey, Regent Dr. Geraldine D. Chapey, Liz Sulik, Mary Dever-Kelly, Teresa Baxter, Rosemary Sullivan, Mary Alice Lane, Mary Leahy, the late Maura Foley, Kathleen Sharkey, Bridie McCotter, Mary Ellen Faherty, Anne McKeon, Mary Bowles, Dorothy Dunne, Mary Bright, Patricia Young-O’Connor, Frances Abbracciamento, Barbara Eisenstadt, Marina Callaghan, Marilyn Blicksilver,...and the list is really too voluminous to continue in such limited space. These women are very different; yet there is a special commonality of which they share. They are leaders, they are givers, they are determined, and they have deep spiritual conviction that sustains them. Either in their personal lives with their family and friends or as public figures devoted to our community-family, they tend to dig in their heels with a measured, yet gracious steadfastness, and we somehow feel our lives enriched and more blessed because of them. Happy Mother;s Day!

***Congratulations to Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey and her committee for a most successful Luncheon at Russo’s On-The-Bay to benefit the Trinity Senior Services. Nearly 700 people attended the affair which says much about the important relevance of the organization, the important services it provides through-out the district, as well as its Executive Director Dr. Chapey. For its premiere fundraiser the committee chose to honor Schools Superintendent Kathleen Cashin; Stanley Gelda, President-Elect of West End Temple; Robert Levine, President and CEO of Penninsula Hospital; Attorney Cody McCone, a champion of Human Rights; Kathleen Riddle, CEO of Outreach Project; Joseph Ruggiere, Founder Community Federal Bank; Sr. Patricia Walsh and Sr. Hannah Cox who both received the Guardian Angel Award;Josephine McPartland and Virginia Shea who each received the Founders Award and who served on the original Board of Directors of Trinity Senior Services; and Frank Pedagno, Retired Vice President of Operations for American Express who was selected Man Of The Year. Dr. Chapey and David Bentley were co-Masters of Ceremony. Frances Abbracciamento served as Chairwoman and The Hon. Chairperson was Mathilde Cuomo. Tom Touhey, of T Tunes, did a splendid job as D.J. Congratulations to Geraldine, Frances, their committee, and all the honorees!

***Happy Birthday wishes to Frank and Debbie McHale and Dede Manzo!
