Fisheads Bury Danbury RFC In Rainstorm By Allan Shaw

Last Saturday, the Rockaway Fisheads hosted Danbury RFC in nearby Fort Tilden. For the first time, the weather forecaster was right on the money. Wind along with rain, more rain and some drizzle was on tap for this game. Its always fun in the mud.

Rockaway scored first on 2nd phase ball with a pick up by Kermit Egan to Wayne Fox to Oakie O’Connor to winger Rugby Bob Johnson for a try down the sideline. Some say it was Bob mobility and quickness that scored the try. Experts say it was the combination of 139 years of age in the back- field. Undoubtedly, the oldest back line in league. Fishead’s version of the "graybeards."

Danbury scored a PK for 3 pts and added more when Danbury pulled ahead with a kick to the corner. Their winger picked up the ball and ran over Rockaway winger, Tyrone Sperling for 10-7 at halftime, Danbury.

The second half proved wind advantage was a major factor as Rockaway quickly scored. Phil "Shrek" Tufano (6’5, 280) picked up loose ball and ran up the middle dragging a few Danbury players over the line for a try. Rockaway secured a 17-10 lead with a PK by Wayne Fox from the 45 meter line. Due to the Danbury’s limited number of players and bad weather, we could not provide a "B" game for our players. Sorry guys we will get ya in next time. The Rockaway Fisheads record is 4-1 and The next opponent is from the Bronx, Lansdowne RFC, this Sat. @ HOME; 1pm.

Rugger Pluggers

Congrats the Mikey Geraghty and brother Brian Geraghty on the opening of their own bar & restaurant on St. Mark’s Place in the heart of the East Village. Jim "Chowderhead" Coyne, Colleen & Shannon O’Rouke, "Ooch" Boyland,

T. A. Fitzpatrick, Claire Collins, D.J. Ryan & Tracey Johnson were among the Rockaway socialites attending the open bar celebration. Behind the stick was Pat "its ladies night!" Connolly. Cold brew, good food and interesting neighbors were plentiful. Question: Where else can you get a palm reading, tattoo, funky new doo, a classic comic book, vintage clothes, all during happy hour? Answer: In the wonderful world of Geraghty-land. Best wishes & success. Tyrone Sperling can testify that beer & horse-shoes can be dangerous. Although he was wearing protective head gear, Tyrone, suffered 5 stiches and a slight concussion during final play of the Fishead Horseshoe Open.

"Shady" Brady is currently sleeping through another season. John Martin promised a return to Fishead Rugby this spring while he was working out with a "12 oz. curl". We’ll see. Adam "Joe Millionaire" Lynch vacationed in New Orleans over the weekend for Mari Gras only to realize it end 2 weeks ago.
