Wild Dogs Spotted in Arverne

Wild Dogs Spotted in Arverne

As the weather continues to improve, more and more Far Rockaway residents will use the same boardwalk and parks where wild dogs run. A pack was recently spotted in the Arverne Urban Renewal area, between Edgemere Avenue and the boardwalk, in the lower 40s. The dogs, three of which are pictured here, traveled two-by-two as they progressed eastward, or uptown. In all, there were six to eight dogs. Wave readers will remember a 2001 mauling of an elderly man and a female jogger, on Beach 68 Street. That attack reportedly involved Pitt Bulls, Rottweilers and mixed breed dogs that were caught by police and put down. The victims of the attack were both seriously injured, requiring hospitalization. Look for an upcoming story in The Wave that will shed more light on the subject of these dangerous animals, and action being taken by the local representatives, the city’s Department of Health, and Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC), to keep Rockaway residents safe from them. To report wild dogs, call the local CACC office at 718-649-8600
