Rockaway Artists Alliance photographers present a wide range of styles, sensibilities and subject matter. From the classic to the avant-garde, from the lush natural world of a national park to manipulated multiple image montages, "Through the Lens" offers some of the best of the rich diversity of member photography in the Rockaway Artists Alliance. "Through the Lens: A Member Photography Exhibition" runs from Saturday, May 10 through June 29 in the sTudio 6 Gallery of the Rockaway Arts Center in Fort Tilden, Gateway National Recreation Area, Rockaway, Queens, NY. The opening wine and cheese reception is Saturday, May 10, 1-4 PM. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free. Gallery hours are Saturdays 12-5 PM and Sundays 1-4 PM. The exhibition is presented by RAA in partnership with the National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area. One-Stop Photo (Riva Photo of Rockaway) is a sponsor of this exhibition.

Jurors for this exhibition are award-winning photographers John J. Grillo and Joseph Rothenberg, whose works have been displayed in prestigious venues including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, respectively.

John Grillo has stated: "Being a juror is a highly subjective task. Joseph and I both have a preference for certain styles and subject matter. This makes for a more diverse exhibition. As curators, we tried to establish early on, what our exhibition goals would be. Since there was no defined theme for this show, we decided that we would use this freedom to select the most meaningful and professionally presented works. Given this broad brush, our goal was to select works that best stir feelings and invigorate the senses."

In the sTudio 7 Gallery (next to the sTudio 6 Gallery) "Unbroken: An Exhibition of Hope and Determination" is presented simultaneous to the showing of "Through the Lens." "Unbroken" is a unique and powerful exhibit of 50 photographs taken by street children and young refugees in Vietnam, Nepal and Afghanistan under projects of PhotoVoice. Their images reflect the realities of their lives and, ultimately, the indestructible optimism of these young people.

See you at the Fort.
