RBVL Prepares For 2003 Season With Meeting
The 2003 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League will hold its last pre-season meeting on Wednesday evening, April 30 at the Kerry Hills Pub. The meeting will run between 8-9 PM and all captains are required to attend. As always, all players are welcome to attend and each squad must be represented. There are a few important items to be covered so please arrive promptly. First up will be a discussion of important rule changes and a review of some important existing rules. Next will be an explanation of the new divisional set-up for the 2003 season. Questions and answers will conclude the session.
After the meeting (at 9 PM), each team will be required to pay the balance of their league fee. Additionally, they should provide a list of their players to insure their placement in the proper division based on their level of play. The league’s goal is to have the most evenly matched teams in each division so that each week will be filled with exciting, action-packed matches, not forfeits and blowouts. Because of the short time frame before opening day, this information must be submitted on 4/30.
Some preliminary rosters indicate several blockbuster trades, waiver pick-ups and split-ups that could drastically affect this year’s standings. Of course, some captains can’t get rid of the dead wood they’ve been carrying for years no matter how hard they try (i.e. John Sica and Rocky). Other teams even have players that are joined permanently by a higher contract, "until death do they part" – if you know what I mean.
Your feedback on the articles has been most welcome. It lets us know that you’re out there, you care and you can read. (Not that that is a requirement to join the RBVL.) And so far, the positive comments are a response to the boring pre-season articles. Wait until the games start and the soap opera known as the RBVL is in full swing. You’ll really enjoy the weekly reports. Last week it was reported that the beginners division averaged only 1 kill and 4.2 beers per match. Several members of the Blue Division took exception to that statistic and said it was more like 8 beers per match. They also felt that 1 kill was a little high.
Hopefully, everyone has already marked his or her calendars with these important dates:
5/21 -- first practice night on the beach. Uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Nets will be available for everyone.
5/28 -- opening day. Play will continue every Wednesday until 8/9.
8/9 -- league championships. Remember this is a Saturday. Keep your schedule clear. The weather is warming and the April snows have melted; it must be time for volleyball. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 718-318-7770 before 9 PM. (However, if you must call after 9 PM please leave a message on Patty’s work voice mail at 212-604-7087.) See you on 4/30.
