Dolphins Dominate As Tennis Season Rolls On By Bernard Ramchatesingh

After a 1-1 start, the Beach Channel High School Boys’ Tennis Team (4-1) looked all set to push forward with their quest for first place in the PSAL Queens B-II Division. Jahvis Ferguson and Imran Khan, two starters from last season, returned to the roster as the Second Doubles Team just in time for an April 3rd showdown at Springfield Gardens High School (0-3). With PSAL Tennis Commissioner Adam Boxer on hand, the Dolphins delivered an astonishing 5-0 defeat to the Golden Eagles. The scores for the five matches were 10-0, 10-0, 10-0, 10-0, 10-1, leading Beach Channel to one of the most lopsided victories in Dolphin history.

Each of the three matches scheduled for the week of April 7th were rained out, resulting in three straight home games on April 14th, 15th, and 16th. The first game up was against Campus Magnet (0-4). The Bull Dogs were coming off of back to back undefeated seasons, but continued their recent decline this season with a 4-1 loss to Beach Channel. Their only win came with Rick Reid defeating Timothy Ramchatesingh 10-1 in First Singles. Soslan Dambegov continued his hot serving streak with 14 aces in a 10-1 Third Singles Victory.

Less than twenty-four hours after celebrating a win over Campus Magnet, early season rivals—the August Martin Falcons (2-3)—came to town to avenge a 3-2 dramatic loss to the Dolphins. However, Beach Channel had other ideas in mind. Four of the five matches finished in less than an hour each, with identical scores of 10-0 across the board. The longest match proved to be the most entertaining, with August Martin’s John Lawrence battling Timothy Ramchatesingh to no avail. Timothy won 10-8 in a very close competition. Other highlights included Soslan Dambegov’s 19 aces in 20 attempts, propelling him to the top spot in PSAL Aces with 59 in 5 matches. Gabriel Martinez holds the eleventh place in Aces with 21.

The Dolphins continue their hunt for first with a home match against John Adams on April 16th. With a win against Adams, Beach Channel can clinch a playoff spot as early as April 28th, with a victory over the division leading Martin Van Buren.
