Molloy HS: David And Goliath Go Swimming
Congratulations to the Archbishop Molloy High School Girl’s Varsity Swim Team! In our inaugural season, we captured the Division "B" Title for Brooklyn and Queens with a 7-1 record.
This year was a very "different" swim season for Archbishop Molloy. In September 2002, with a third class of girs entering Molloy, a girl’s Varsity Swim Team was created. As sophomores, we were very excited because we swam on the boys varsity freshman year and we were looking forward to swimming against our female peers. We started out with about 30 girls. Then, for reasons completely out of our control, the freshman girls wee not permitted to swim with the girls varsity. I still don’t understand why they were not permitted to swim with us. I think someone noticed how awesome these girls were when they swam with the freshman boys and got nervous. It was very discouraging for us but we had the greatest support form our coaches, Brother James Norton and our families.
Mr. Donald Green, Mrs. HeatherGreen-Wresch, Mr. Dennis Wresch and Mr. Keith Green are the most unbelievable coaches. They never let us down! They never let us get discouraged. They taught us so much about swimming, team spirit and good sportsmanship. Our coaches are the best and we say "Thank you and Congratulations to Them."
Our most exciting meet this season was against Bishop Kearney High School. We were definitely "David" to their "Goliath". We knew going into the last relay we had to place first and third to win the meet. Most of us already swam in three races and were pretty tired but we were motivated to win and we did! We won the meet by 2 points!!
At the CHSAA Championship at Nassau Community College on February 10, 2003, Archbishop Molloy placed 5th out of 15 schools. Not bad for a team consisting of 13 swimmers! Most of the schools we swam against have rosters of 30 or more girls.
Every Archbishop Molloy girl who swam took home a medal or place ribbon in every event. Next year, Archbishop Molloy Girl’s Varsity will move into the CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens "A" Division. With our returning 13 swimmers and new talent arriving, especially from the "ROCKAWAYS", we are looking forward to making big waves in the Division "A" Girl’s Swimming. Go Molloy!
