The Stars made their way to Hackensack, NJ to compete in a season ending Spring Tournament. The Stars culminated their 2002/2003 season by winning their third tournament of the campaign, as they defeated the Long Island Gulls A team by a 6-3 score. In a rough and tough game, which saw the Stars refuse to allow the Gulls to take liberties, as they had in the previous contest, the Stars were physical from the start and manhandled the Gulls at every opportunity.
There were 17 penalties called, with 13 being charged to the Stars. However, the Coney Island boys were near flawless in their penalty killing, while they stunned the Gulls by scoring 3 short-handed goals.
The Stars opened the scoring midway through the first period, as center Kenny Fiorentino snapped home a short handed goal, following a great rush and backhanded shot from winger Charlie Gotard. Less than a minute later, while still killing the same penalty, center Alex Mitic made it 2-0 by putting a wrist shot home, assisted by winger Patrick Brown. With 2:57 to go in the period the Gulls narrowed the gap to a 1 goal, by beating Stars goalie Ricky Cibrano.
But, with 1:05 to go, Mitic got the Stars lead back to two, with an unassisted goal. There was but 42 seconds remaining in the period when Brown and Mitic combined on a beautiful give and go, which resulted in a 4-1 Stars lead, on Brown’s goal. Early in the middle period, Stars defenseman Paddy Mead then put the Stars ahead by a 6-2 score, with a thunderous blast from the right point. He was assisted by winger Michael Davie and Mitic. The Gulls scored early in the final period to make 6-3, but then the Stars killed off a succession of penalties to capture the tournament. The Stars, although shorthanded for most of the game, out shot the Gulls by a 42-20 margin.
Saturday, March 22, 2003 - Game 2- The Stars went up against the Long Island Gulls and in a penalty filled game the Brooklyn team came away with a 6-2 win.
The Stars made a comeback with a 3-2 lead 1:08 into the final period, as Honovic found paydirt, assisted by center Alex Mitic. 3 minutes later it was a 4-2 game, as winger Patrick Brown found the net, assisted by Mitic and winger Michael Davie. The Stars once again outshot their opponents, this time by a 31-18 margin. 14 penalties were called in the game, 4 against the Stars, with the rest being assessed to the Gulls, mainly in the final period.
