Beach Channel Boys Serve Up a New Season
Almost one year ago, ten boys from Beach Channel High School walked away from a heartbreaking season. With a 5-5 record, they were tied for third in the PSAL Queens B II Division. After their last match on May 6th, 2002, another loss, then freshmen Gabriel Martinez and Timothy Ramchatesingh vowed to not let that happen again. These boys wanted to win. Gabriel and Timothy are now Team Captains and the team has grown to 12 members. It’s game time!
Wednesday, March 26th, 2003: After an hour and a half ride through the heart of Queens, the new Beach Channel Boys Tennis Team traveled out to August Martin High School under rain-threatening skies. Nervous as they were, they served up their first competition of the season with a thrilling win over the August Martin Falcons - extending August Martin’s winless streak to 19 games over 2 and a half seasons. Gabriel Martinez and Soslan Dambegov scored eleven and fourteen aces respectively - both personal bests - in their victories. But it was the inspired play by Chris Sevigny and Sebastian Stefaniak that sealed the win. They won 10-1 over August Martin’s second doubles team in their first ever PSAL Match!
Two days after the first team victory set in, the team hosted first place contender Martin Van Buren. The Fighting VeeBees were riding on a three game win streak against Beach Channel. In a hard fought competition, both sides played very well. In the end, however, Van Buren was just too much for the Dolphins, slipping by with a 3-2 win. The home match on April 1st against John Adams was postponed due to the weather.
