World War II Veteran

Walter E. Hargraves, a Rockaway Park resident who was born in North Carolina, died on March 25.

Hargraves, a World War II Army veteran, is predeceased by his wife, Thelma Jackson, and by his daughter, Paula Williams..

He is survived by his daughters, Sharman Mulderick, Linda Holmes, Bernice McQueen and Annette Harbraves and his son, Bernard. He is also survived by his brother, Leonard and by a sister, Barbara Phenezze, by 25 grandchildren and one great-grand-

Interment is at Calverton Cemetery under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home.


William Lester Kennedy

William Lester Kennedy, known as "Les," passed away January 28. He died just three months before what would have been his 98th birthday.

Kennedy was born and raised in Rockaway and lived for years on Beach 81 Street. Like his father, he worked as a builder. He also raised his children here.

Kennedy is survived by his wife Dorothy "nee Hand" Kennedy, his daughters Jeanne Cummings, Dorothy Guzoules, and Mary Ellen Torre. Also survived by nine grandchildren: Suzanne, Richard, Theresa, Ellen Mary, Mary Elizabeth, Barbara, Douglas, Andrew, and Christy. He had fourteen great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.

Kennedy was buried from St. Bernards Church in Levittown, Long Island, the town where his wife now lives.


Hector Nerys
50 Year Resident

Hector Nerys, who was born in Puerto Rico, but who lived in Rockaway Beach for more than 50 years, died on March 26.

Nerys attended St. Rose of Lima Church for many years. He is survived by his companion, Alice Sansone, his sons, Tony, Hector and Junior and his daughters, Milagros, Iris, Laura and Magda. He is also survived by his brothers, Victor, Raymond, Joseph and Benny and by his sister, Maria Navarro, and by eight grandchildren.


Jacqueline Kaye Richardson

Jacqueline Kaye Richardson, known to many as Jackie, died on March 20. She was 30 years old.

Richardson, who lived in the Rockaway community for three decades, was born in Orangeburg. S.C. She worked as a cashier.

She is survived by her husband Charlie Mundy, son Charlie Jamal, brother Murray Jr., uncle W.J. Richardson, aunts Ollie Samuels, Jessie Carr and Emma Larrymore. Also by long-time family friend Carol Hopewell and others.

A mass was held on March 28 at Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Friend-ship Chapel, in Inwood. Burial was at Rockville Cemetery in Lynbrook, N.Y.


Elizabeth Slattery
Life-Long Resident

Elizabeth Slatters, a life-long resident of Rockaway until she moved to Venice, Florida, died on March 27.

Slattery, who was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima Church, is predeceased by his daughters, Arlene Slattery Elle Milmore and Mary Malloy and by his brother, Francis T. Slattery.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Loos,by six grandchildren and one great-child.

Interment is at Long Island National Cemetery under the direction of Denis. S. O'Connor Funeral Home.


Mildred G. Spata

Mildred G. Spata, a life-long Rockaway resident and a teacher at St. Camillus for more than 25 years, died on April 2.

Spata, the daughter of the late James Greenrose, the proprietor of Greenrose Restaurant, a popular Rockaway eatery in the 1930's and 1940's, was a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales and a member of the Rockaway Council Columbettes.

Born in Manhattan, Spata is predeceased by her husband, Nicholas Spata. She is survived by her son, The Reverend James Spata and by her daughters, Frances Gargiula and Camille Genhrich.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-children.

Visitation will be held Sunday April 6 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and from
7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Denis
S. O'Connor Funeral Home.

Funeral mass will be Monday, April 7 at 9:45 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church.

Interment will be at the St. Charles Cemetery under the direction of the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home.


Michael P. Sweeney

Michael P. Sweeney, a life-long resident of Rockaway Park, died on March 28.

Sweeney, a hairdresser with his own salon, was a parishioner at St. Camillus Church.

He is predeceased by his father, Hugh Sweeney.

He is survived by his mother, Maureen (nee, Stanley) Sweeney, his sister, Elizabeth, brother Thomas Sweeney, his nephew, Jimmy Faulhaber and his niece, Tina Faulhaber.


Helen C. Torres

Helen C. Torres, who lived in Rockaway for many years, passed away on March 27. She was 56.

Torres, a homemaker, was born in Brooklyn. She died after a brief illness.

She is predeceased by her daughter Brenda, and son Freddy.

She is survived by her husband Fredrick, daughters Debbie and Stacy. Also by son-in-law Marty, three grandchildren, and many friends from the Rockaways.

Interment was at Cypress Hills Cemetery under the direction of the Lawrence Funeral Chapel.


Annie Ruth Waiters
Stock Clerk

Annie Ruth Waiters, a Rockaway resident, passed away March 22.

Born in Santee, S.C., Waiters worked as a stock clerk.

She is predeceased by sister Carol Waiters, nephew Damon Walker, and aunt Lucille Murray.

She is survived by her husband Barkim Harris, sisters Patricia Threasher and Barbara, brothers Ronnie and Jerome, nieces Nyteeyia, Tamarra, Latoya, Kayla, and Tamika, nephews Rashawn, "Buster" Sellers, many cousins and friends.

A memorial service was held on March 29, at Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Friendship Chapel.

Disposition by Oxford Hills Crematory.

Clifton Washington , Sr.
Factory Foreman

Clifton Washington, Sr., born in Georgetown, S.C. died on March 22.

Washington, who worked as a factory worker, is survived by her daughter Janice Covington, son William Washington. Also by grandchildren Sharon, Karen, Mark, Keith, Brian, and Kara, great grandchildren Tanisha, Tiara, and Erik, Jr., and by sister-in-law Beatrice Thorton, and several other relatives.

A mass was held at Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Friendship Chapel in Inwood. Disposition by Oxford Hills Crematory, in Chester, N.Y.
