What do you get when you bring the latest in sportswear, accessories, and collectibles to the heart of the west end's shopping center-Mocean!

Finding affordable athletic wear in Rockaway can be a challenge, and traveling off the peninsula to keep new shoes on the feet of her four sons made co-owner Cristine Mastros realize the neighborhood needed something, she said. The store's mission, she said, is to provide great items at competitive prices-locally.

"People are not used to shopping in Rockaway for this type of stuff," Cristine said. But that's changing.

"The community is getting to know us," she added.

Since Mocean opened in February, business has been swelling. Cristine said the community support has been "great" and that word-of-mouth is helping to bring waves of shoppers into the store.

From fitted caps to shin-guards Mocean has many athletic needs covered Cristine said. They even have the latest fanwear from the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball team. Her husband Paul, also co-owner, runs the collectible card section. "It's good for serious collectors and kids who just want to have some sports cards," Cristine said. Mocean, she said, even stocks those need-'em-in-a-pinch items like laces, pins (to inflate balls), and glove oil for that old mitt that won't quit.

After the tragedies that occurred in Rockaway and Manhattan in 2001, Cristine said she and husband Paul, felt closer than ever to their Rock-away neighbors.

"We care about the community," Cristine said. She and Paul, both long-time Rockaway residents felt "close to the loss," and wanted to do something positive. Having been in the exercise industry for years- Paul is the director of the Brooklyn Sports Club-opening Mocean was a natural choice.

The spelling of the store's name, pronounced "motion," contains a reference to Rockaway's wavy waters.

"We're on the ocean-and it's about movement and exercise," Cristine said.
