Kareem Edwards, resident of Far Rockaway, and a senior computer programming major at Thomas A. Edison Vocational & Technical High School, has been awarded a Posse Scholarship to DePauw University in Indiana.

Posse Scholarships are provided by the Posse Foundation, and they are awarded based on the student’s merit and leadership activities. Ten full scholarships are given annually to students in New York City public schools so they can attend major universities. Two years ago one was given to Edison High School medical/pharmacology major Omar Kamal so he could attend Brandeis University.

Edwards received his scholarship due to his many activities at Edison High School and the community. He is currently the Student Organization Vice President. He has been on the Queens High School’s Superintendent’s Advisory Committee. In his sophomore year, he attended the HBOY Leadership Seminar connected with the Hugh O’Brian Leadership Organization.

Last summer Edwards was one of the New York City high school students who visited Germany as a Youth Ambassador in the Bridge to Berlin Program as a guest of the German Government after the September 11 tragedy.

He is on the Honor Roll, is a Presidential Scholar, and has been a student member of C-30 committees, which picks supervisors in the school. He was active in the school’s Penny Harvest and helped to raise money for the March of Dimes to fight birth defects. He has been active in other school functions such as the annual Food Drive and organizing school dances. He is involved in community service by tutoring younger children.

Edwards is one of the many leaders produced in this city’s schools. Gary Burley is Coordinator of Student Affairs at Edison High School. Ilona S. Posner is Principal. Edison High School is unzoned and accepts students from all communities in the five boroughs.
