The 2002-2003-basketball season for the St. Francis de Sales 6th grade CYO boys was another championship season for these young hoopsters. For the second year in a row, this team of talented athletes has distinguished themselves amongst stiff competition to bring home the trophies for the Southern Queens- Ozone Park Regional Championship.

The experienced coaching dynamic duo of Marty and Keith Andresen guided the team to their incredible 13-1 season. Coach Keith was quoted early in the season as saying, "this team is going all the way. It is a team with depth at each position. Every player can step up and play their position with expertise and confidence."

Point guards Thomas Ryan, Ken Smith, and John Reinhardt’s play-setting abilities allowed their teammates Eric Maxfield, John Ameruso, Mike and Matt Knott to score consistently. The team could not have come this far without the outstanding rebounding abilities of the big man Nick Mastros, Neil ‘Deadeye’ Howard, and Matt ‘The Animal’ Alessi. These three could always be counted on to bring down the ball. Outstanding defensive players Josh Steinberg, Matt Ellis, and Ryan Meade distinguished themselves as prominent forwards and would ‘box-out’ any offensive moves.

This year, our friends from South Windsor, Connecticut joined us for our annual tournament. This much anticipated event is always fun. This year’s game was again another nail biter with South Windsor pulling the game out at the end. The finale is always a scrumptious spaghetti dinner. This year’s chefs, John Ameruso, Ira Steinberg, Bob Alessi and Kevin Ellis, stepped it up to make this dinner a culinary success.

Besides their serious game pace on the court, the SFDS team is a great group of friends that has a lot of fun. Congratulation boys on another great season!!
