Belle Harbor Woman A Suicide

The quiet of residential Belle Harbor was shattered last Tuesday morning by numerous police units responding to 122-14 Newport Avenue on a call of a possible body at that location.

What the first units from the 100 Precinct responding to the call found was the body of 36-year-old Victoria Mazzarelli hanging by a rope from a rafter in the garage.

By 9:30 a.m., about a half hour after the original call, residents in the area knew that something had happened at that home, as police blocked off the street and wrapped yellow crime scene tape around the garage at the rear of the home. More than a dozen police vehicles stood on both Newport Avenue and on Beach 122 Street. Many calls to The Wave indicated that people worried that the police presence in the area was due to some sort of terrorist activity in Belle Harbor.

According to police sources, officials of the city's Emergency Medical Service declared Mazzarelli dead at the scene.

An NYPD spokesperson at the office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information (DCPI) told The Wave that it could not provide such information as to who found the woman's body or a motive for the apparent suicide because "there is no criminality involved with the case."
