New Simulator Transports You Back In Time
4D-X, 4-D Experience Simulator is the newest addition to the Virtual Flight Zone at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum.
Riders, equipped with 3-D glasses, travel through time back to 1945 and experience a simulated flight mission during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Special effects include wind, mist and surround sound channeled thro-ugh the six-degree motion-based simulator. Visitors can also enjoy G-Force Encounter Simulators piloting a supersonic jet plane with 360 degrees of motion.
Visitors can also explore other exhibits:
• "All Hands On Deck" – Visitors learn about how things work on ships by operating ship-to-ship Navy signal lamps to test their code sending skills. A series of hatches, portholes, and watertight doors are ready to be battened down by would-be deck hands and visitors can also see how "ship-shape" they are with a knot-tying challenge. The exhibit includes artifacts from a real USS Navy warship.
• "Intrepid Remembers 9/11" – Two exhibits, outdoor and indoor, honor the heroes and victims of September 11. An outdoor exhibit features two 14 foot steel beams from the World Trade Center and a rescue worker etching. The indoor exhibit includes a 17-foot long by 10-foot high mural of the NYC skyline, artwork from school children across the nation, and a collection of over 100 previous unreleased photos.
• Attack Cobra Helicopter – Donated by the United States Army, the AH1S Cobra Helicopter is an earlier generation of the cobra helicopters deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
