What a week! Ran into friends from Rockaway at every turn. First of all the IBS (International Beauty Show) was at the Javits Center for several days, now under new management and they were unfamiliar with me or my work. Ah, but Rockaway resident, Valerie Clark who was there to help out, came to my rescue and vouched for me as a legitimate press person. Thank you Valerie. The show was really great, from new hair styles, cuts and colors. It is amazing what they can do with the growth on top of our heads... irons to straighten, irons to curl. You name it they had them all. In the nail department you can now have the faces of your grandchildren painted on your nails. Also, instead of lengthening nails with artificial nails glued over the nail, the artificial nails may now be placed under the nail for longer and stronger manicures. Some of these new and inventive procedures may soon be available at Salon "J". Look for them and/or ask for them. Also, while I was at "Janet’s" for my weekly manicure which I have every two or three weeks because Janet’s manicures are so lasting, I called upon Gary to trim my locks for my two week tour of South Africa, flying out this week via South African Airways (business class) and hosted by Orient-Express Hotels in Johannasburg and Capetown.. Gary always does such a great job and he gave me a "Chicago Bob", as in Rene’. Complimentary comments were much appreciated.

This was St. Patty’s week (even though this column is getting to you a week late) and I ran into Joan Hughes and hubby, Frank from the BPSC at the Irish Heritage Celebration at City Hall. The Honorees were: Joseph Featherston from Roxbury, outstanding fundraiser for the Special Olympics who sent 50 to children Dublin and Galway to compete in the Special Olympic games; Timothy Carey received the, Irishman of the Year award, a noted environmentalist, who, through his efforts, the Irish Famine memorial was built at Battery Park, and for the great leadership he showed at Sept. 11 WTC. The St. Camillus Children who participated in Special Olympics were well represented and performed vocally. I also met: Kathleen Moriarity with son, Brian, Susan Brady, Kim Brady and Kathy Clark, volunteers from Rockaway. I met President of the City Council, Haas Anthony with Chris Tripoulas, The Tir Na Gael Irish Step Dancers instructed by Lyn Van Cherrie danced their feet off in their pretty colored costumes. Fine Irish fare such as: corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and soda bread was served to the enjoyment of all. Try to attend next year. It is a nice affair where you meet all your friends.

Welcome to Sheila and Derek McCarthy, new residents of Breezy Point. Claire Timmons and husband, Bob and brother, Donald Ritter have taken over and renovated the Roxbury Supermarket and it now really look super... all fully stocked and ready for customers. Nicole Crowley celebrates her seventeenth birthday on Mar. 31. and little Sabrina McCarthy will be two on Mar. 29. Congratulations and best wishes to both.

St. Patty’s, March 17 started with Irish Chamber of Commerce breakfast at the Waldorf Astoria following mass at St. Patrick’s Catherdral. Honorable George E. Pataki, New York State Governor addressed the Irish crowd and requested we pray for peace and for the boys who will fight the war in Iraq. Good Day Newscaster, Jim Ryan was master of Ceremonies.

Since it was a day for the Irish why not spend a little time at an Irish Hotel... the Grand Central Fitzpatrick Hotel was a hotel I hadn’t visited and found it very, very charming, warm and homey. I had the pleasure of meeting Robert the gracious General Manager who is there to see you enjoy all their amenities the hotel has to offer. They boasted live Irish music from 3 to 8 with Irish Step dancers from 6 to 8 and music and festivities to last until 11pm. A full St. Patty’s Day.

Don’t know if any of you have thoughts, as you get older, of a residential retirement apartment living If you have thoughts along this line and want to keep city life activity in your lives surrounded by friendly attractive people, comfortable and spacious apartments, impeccably clean with on call 24 hour nurse service, if needed, an elegant restaurant that serves gourmet food, one of your best bets is the Hallmark with a promenade overlooking the Hudson. It is two blocks from the Chambers St. train station. Though they have shuttle buses to take you shopping or to B’way shows. Congratulations to Brian Magoolaghan, our new Asst. Editor. I know his brother Dennis who took me for a ride in his beautiful sailboat a number of years ago. This was brought to mind by his grandmother, Frances, who was in the car when Brian’s cousin, Denise Magoolaghan, with her boyfriend, Derek Casey, graciously offered to drive me to Rockaway following their sumptuous brunch at Kennedy’s.

As you read above I will be off to South Africa for 15 days. If I can possible e-mail my column and pictures back, you will be able to follow the details of my trip. In the meantime the travel office is closed till April 10. Please send News for the column to The Wave to my attention. TV info call Metro Access Studios.

The war is not as easy as we thought. God bless all of our men and women who are fighting in Iraq and bring them home swiftly.
