P.S. 197 Student Wins Contest
Elliot Guzman, Jr., a fifth grade student from P.S. 197 in Far Rock-away, was honored at the Board of Education on Tues-day, February 4 for his essay on Elizabeth Eckford and how she made a difference in his life. He was touched by her eagerness and persistence to learn. Eckford never let anything stand in the way of her dreams. The contest, sponsored by The Association of Black Educators of New York ((ABENY, Inc.) featured essays, drawings, dancing and singing to celebrate and commemorate African Americans from around the world during Black History Month. Principal Linda Smith and Guzman’s teacher, Mrs. Audrey Landau of class 5-317, are proud of Elliot. He is an example of the school motto of "Cultivating Valuable Pearls," everyday.
